Really 5-10% for professional development and associations? That sounds like an awful lot of money, even (or especially) given my pitiful salary (but I'm a part-time museum professional, working on PhD).

Would anyone share how much they spend each year on this category, both their own funds, and their museum's?

What association memberships does everyone feel are absolutely essential? If I have access to, say, AAM benefits through my job, do I really need my own membership too?

Does anyone know if there are any volunteer opportunities at AAM Chicago? Specifically, volunteering in exchange for admission is what I'm trying to find out about. I didn't find anything on the conference website.

I'm a grad student in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois and I've taken a few museum studies courses, but there is no degree/certificate program for Museum Studies at the UIUC. I'd really like to go to AAM, especially since it is pretty much right in my backyard, but even the student rate is a bit high for me. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
